What is Visceral Manipulation?

“Viscera” relates to the internal organs of the body, such as the liver, kidneys and intestines. Organ-specific fascial mobilisations (VM) encourage the normal mobility & motility of the viscera.

Visceral Manipulation is based on the specific placement of soft manual forces to encourage the normal mobility, tone, and motion of the internal organs (viscera) and their connective tissues.

Optimum health relies on a harmonious relationship between the motions of the organs and other structures of the body. There are many reasons for an organ to lose its mobility: physical traumas, surgeries, infections, and pregnancy/delivery.

Common organs treated in visceral manipulation

Liver

Function: The Liver is both a gland and an internal organ. It has over 500 functions, which include the production of proteins, metabolism, synthesis and storage of nutrients, detoxification, hormonal metabolism, and synthesis and secretion of bile.

Mood: Anger & Frustration.

Anatomy: There are four lobes of the liver and 3 broad main ligaments but can be broken down into specific 8 ligaments.

Abdominal Sphincters

Function: Abdominal sphincters are highly innervated, one-way values made up of muscle that split up different parts of the digestive system.

Anatomy: Ring-like muscles, with over 50 distinct types of sphincters in the human body, some of which function involuntarily, some of which respond to stimuli, and others of which are controlled voluntarily. Some sphincters are as large as a walnut, while others are microscopic.

Small Intestines

Function: Absorb key nutrients and water, and helps digest fats, proteins and CHOs.

Mood: Stress, Frustration.

Anatomy: impressive blood supply.
